I’ve grew up around creatives. My mom was a milliner (hat designer) and all her friends were artists, poets, musicians, writers and everything in between. I loved how they brought their ideas to life. They put on plays, art shows, debates and arts projects. Have to say seeing them was the best part of my childhood. My mom always brought us with her, we learnt so much about art, history and society. It always brings back great memories for me.
Considering I was brought up around so much creativity most would think I would have picked a creative career. Unfortunately I’m not very artistic, have no musical ability and cannot sew to save my life. Instead I decided to do law at university which I enjoyed for the most part. Problem was that after graduation I realised I didn’t want to work as a solicitor or barrister. I tried working in a law firm but it wasn’t for me. So I tried working out what I wanted to do. Looking back on my time at university I remembered my favourite module was Intellectual Property law. Learning about copyright, design rights, patents and trade marks was interesting to me. I decided I wanted to learn more about the subject so studied for a masters in intellectual property law.
For my masters I had to move to London which was such a dream for me. I loved meeting new people and a lot of people I met with were creatives. As soon as people knew I was doing IP law they started asking me questions. They wanted to know how IP could help them in their businesses and careers. So many people needed help and they were contacting me in person or through social media.
I had a friend at the time who was a photographer and I said to him how come so many people need help with IP? Didn’t they learn about it in college or university while on their courses? He told me most don’t learn about IP or about business in general. This shocked me because if you’re on a creative degree or course you are much more likely to go onto self employment rather than work for a company.
This was what made me want to start Lawful Creators. Realising how many creatives were having problems with their IP I knew there needed to be products and services available. Lawful Creators mission is to turn ideas into business assets using IP. My passion is working with creatives so that their businesses are running the best they can be.
